When I was about twelve I discovered a box of letters in the back of the sewing cabinet. They weren’t hidden, just tucked away and forgotten. Literally thousands of letters from my grandparents to my parents, and my parents to each other.

It is the last of these that are most precious to me. My parents met each other on a biking trip in South Africa while they were university students, and after falling in love almost immediately, they got engaged after just four days of knowing each other. They have now been married for 30 years and are still the happiest couple I know.

“I love you my dear. You look so nice, you feel so nice, you are so nice! You have the best smile, the best haircut, the best muscles, the best eyes, the best thinkings, the best of everything! I would like to write a few poems about you, but my poems aren’t so good. “

Okay so I didn’t take the picture immediately below. Obviously.  But my parents are a soulful and beautiful pair. I guess in its own way there is nothing more delicate than the kind of love that causes you to put everything right out in the open.
